Alan Lomax - The Land Where The Blues Began (2002)

A self-described “song-hunter,” the folklorist Alan Lomax traveled the Mississippi Delta in the 1930’s and ‘40s, armed with primitive recording equipment and a keen love of the Delta’s music heritage. Crisscrossing the towns and hamlets where the blues began, Lomax gave voice to such greats as Leadbelly, Fred MacDowell, Muddy Waters, and many others, all of whom made their debut recordings with him.

Big Mama Thornton - Ball 'n' chain (1968)

Elle a la voix puissante et le timbre singulier. Comment peut-on être indifférente aux moanins de Big Mama Thornton? Fille d'un pasteur originaire de Montgomery, elle commença à chanter dés l'âge de 7 ans. Elle quitta sa ville natale à l'âge de 14 ans suite au décès de mère pour entamer une carrière de blueswoman à envier. Elle faisait les festivals les plus renommés : Newport Jazz Festival, Montery Jazz Festival, San Francisco Blues Festival.. Elle collaborait avec les Bluesman les plus célèbres : Johnny Ace, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, Larry Williams, B.B. King.. Sa carrière s’acheva en 1984 par une attaque cardiaque après un long combat contre l'alcoolisme.  Big Mama Thornton était et restera un pilier du Blues et une source d'inspiration pour beaucoup d'artistes comme un certain Elvis Presley et une certaine Janis Joplin qui a repris en 1967 le fameux morceau "Ball 'n' Chain". Mississippi John Hurt - Blues Legend (2003)

Le fabuleux destin d'un vrai Bluesman venu d'un minuscule point appelé Avalon! Le petit John Hurt , pauvre et faisant partie d'une famille nombreuse, eut ses premiers contacts avec la musique pendant les soirées animées par les musiciens itinérants et les songsters qui sont des juke-box humains en perpétuel errance dans le pays chantant une multitude des répertoires musicaux! Ceci forgea son talent incroyable du conteur et aida à définir son style unique du jeu : le finger-picking! Il gagna sa vie en enregistrant des disques. Ce fut un échec en 1928 et il tomba dans l'oubli. 

En 1963, deux passionnés Tom Hawskins et Mike Stewet tombèrent sur les enregistements de 1928 et précisément "Avalon, My Home Town" danslaquelle John faisait l'éloge de son village. Ils allèrent à ce village oublié et trouvèrent après 35 ans un Mississippi John Hurt cultivant sa terre et jouant de la guitare comme il a toujours fait! Et ce fut son grand retour. Il donna son premier concert à 69 ans en 1963 au Newport Folk Festival. Il vivait seulement 3 ans de gloire. En 1966, tout prit fin à Avalon qui fut elle aussi le départ.

Junior Kimbrough - God Knows I Tried (1998)

Si vous essayez de restreindre le blues du Junior Kimbrough sous la marque de Delta Blues ou Chicago Blues, je vous assure que vous n'y arriverez pas! C'est un style à part entière : Hypnotic Blues! God Knows I tried est un album posthume qui présente des performances bien différentes du Junior mais qui convergent vers un point caractéristique de ce Bluesman : Saturation du son et Trance. Appréciez le génie de Kimbrough qui a forgé une carrière atypique!

Big Bill Broonzy - Black, Brown and White (1951)

Who said  that the blues was a music of submission? It's true that  most blues tell the misery affecting the singer without other forms of claims. But some  political themes are sometimes referred directly. This is the case of the "Black, Brown and White"'s Big Bill Broonzy. In the chorus, the blues man denounces discrimination against blacks :

 They says if you was white, should be all right

If you was brown, stick around

But as you's black, m-mm brother, git back git back git back

Rare 1930's Blues 1934-1937

The artists on this discprovide not only some fascinating blues in the 1930's styles but plenty of discographical and biographical mysteries. Their very excellence, coupled with their obscurity, demonstrates that the blues recorded in Chicago during that decade were capable of considerable depth and variety and should be not casually written off with reference to such stereotypes as the "Bluebird Beat" or the heavy hand of producer Lester Melrose.
