The Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances a Sophie (1970)

In 1970, the members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago were living as expatriats in Paris. The group had only recently expanded to its permanent quintet status with the addition of drummer/percussionist Don Moye when they were asked by New Wave director Moshe Misrahi to provide the soundtrack for his movie, Les Stances a Sophie. The music was never used in the film but, luckily, i twas recorded. The result was one of the landmark records of the burgeoning avant-garde of the time and, simply put, one of the greatest jazz albums ever. On two of the tracks, the Art Ensemble is joined by vocalist Fontella Bass, at the time the wife of trumpeter  Lester Bowie and riding the success of her pop-soul hit Rescue Me. She's featured most prominently on the opening number, Theme De Yoyo, an astounding piece that has achieved legendary status as the finest fusion of funk and avant-garde jazz ever recorded. The mix is indeed seamless, with Moye and Favors laying down a throbbing, infectious groove, Bass singing the surreally erotic lyrics with enormous soul and the horn players soloing with ecstatic abandon. The remaining pieces cover a wide range stylistically with no less beauty and imagination, including two variations on a theme by Monteverdi, intense free improvising and soft, deeply probing sonic investigations.Their extensive knowledge of prior jazz styles, love of unusual sound sources (the so-called "little instruments) and fearless exploration of the furthest reaches of both instrumental and compositional possibilities came into full flower on this record.

Bill Evans - Further Conversations With Myself (1967)

For Bill Evans’ second solo record of unaccompanied but overdubbed piano solo, he decided to simplify the concept used in Conversations With Myself (Which had him playing three pianos) by only playing two this time. This straight CD reissue of the original LP (which is given additional new liner notes) is brief in time, but Evans plays quite well throughout. In particular, his versions of Johnny Mandel’s « Emily » and « Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town » are most memorable. A thoughtful and spontaneous sounding set of melodic music.

Majid Bekkas - African Gnawa Blues (2001)

Majid Bekkas, oud and guembri virtuoso, guitar professor and singer, has long been a star in his home country Morocco. Over the last few years, he has found his way into the European jazz scene through his collaborations with Archie Shepp, Louis Sclavis, Flavio Boltro or Klaus Doldinger. Abdelmajid Bekkas was born and still lives in Salé, Morocco. He studied classical guitar and oud at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Rabat and learnt Gnawa music through the teachings of the master Ba Houmane. Gnawa appeared in the 16th century. During the conquest of Sudan, Ahmed El Mansour Dahbi set up the first trading and cultural links between Timbuktu, near Zagora where Bekkas comes from, and Marrakech. The secular music is still considered the "healer of souls" from Essaouira to Marrakech, easily understandable when you listen to the spellbinding sound of Bekkas´ voice, guembri and guitar. Like a watermark, the mystery of Africa can be felt in the backround, alongside the blues. Gnawa´s intact purity is the essence of the authenticity. By claiming to be part of Africa, the mother of the blues and ist numerous offspring such as funk, Bekkas is placing Gnawa in its primary dimension. By opening the spectrum (including elements of contemporary western music), Bekkas attains a universal status that is nurtured by the path he travelled. These include: jazz, alongside pioneers such as Peter Brötzmann, Archie Shepp, Flavio Boltro, Louis Sclavis.
With "Daymallah" Bekkas represents Morocco on the award-winning CD compilation "Desert Blues 2". He already performed at several international festivals, such as WOMEX Sevilla 2003, Gaume Jazz Festival, Huyart Festival, Grenoble Jazz Festival, Festival de Essaouira, ...
Bekkas´ openness and ability to balance modernism and memory with a rare talent that knews no compromise, frees the music from the stamp of time. The memory is that of pain and wisdom, of songs that come from the slaves of Africa.

Miles Davis - Recording Sessions in 1956 (4 albums)

The story of these recordings has been retold many times in jazz literature. In the late summer of 1955, Davis recruited four mostly unknown musicians for his first working band (the “First Great Quintet”): John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. They recorded six tracks in Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio on November 16, 1955, that became the Prestige LP The New Miles Davis Quintet. Then Davis was offered an attractive recording contract by Columbia. In order to sign it, he had to satisfy the terms of his Prestige contract by making four more albums. In two epic sessions, on May 11 and October 26, 1956, Davis’ band recorded 26 tracks, all first takes. They became the Prestige LPs Workin’, Steamin’, Cookin’ and Relaxin’. Probably no jazz artist has ever recorded so many masterpieces in such a condensed window of studio time.

Archie Shepp - Yasmin, A Black Woman (1969)

This fine1969 offering from tenor and soprano saxophonist Archie Shepp finds theartist deep within the progressive, politically charged aesthetics and fiery playing that characterized his best avant-garde work.
YASMINA marks Shepp's first meeting with members of the Chicago avant jazz scene, namely Lester Bowie and Roscoe Mitchell from the Art Ensemble of Chicago. There are several other guests here, including Philly Joe Jones and Hank Mobley, that make this exploratory set not only an excellent example of heavy late-'60s out jazz, but an unexpectedly swingin' one.

Rare 1930's Blues 1934-1937

The artists on this discprovide not only some fascinating blues in the 1930's styles but plenty of discographical and biographical mysteries. Their very excellence, coupled with their obscurity, demonstrates that the blues recorded in Chicago during that decade were capable of considerable depth and variety and should be not casually written off with reference to such stereotypes as the "Bluebird Beat" or the heavy hand of producer Lester Melrose.
